More Detail on Bat Speed/Torque

The last few posts I’ve provided some videos that illustrate what hitters refer to as torque.  Simply put this is how you create massive bat speed.  I was reviewing some highlights of game 5 of the World Series last night and I came across Raul Ibanez’ 425 foot blast.  He creates some unreal torque with this swing. Check it out here.

How can you tell there is torque in a swing?

Look how early his hips open while he holds his hands back.  Great hitters always lead with their hips.  This allows your core to whip your hands into and through the strike zone.

I’ll post some more “how to” videos on this concept.  It’s tricky to master, but oh so worth the pain of learning it.  Once you apply it to your swing your power numbers will go through the roof.

Some more examples of torque:

Utley’s home runs in the World Series - 2:31 worth of torque baby! You’ll see with Chase that he rotates his hips inward some before they open.  Just coiling a bit more for some extra pop.  Watch the hips!  There is some great slow-mo action in this collection.

Alex Rodriguez - You’ll see a double by A-Rod.  One of the toughest guys to pitch to when his timing is down.  Has a tough time with the ball in on his hands, but absolutely punishes balls most other places on the plate.

Mark Teixeira - Just pay close attention to :35 into the clip.  Hips first, hands second…
